This movie is a wonderfully fun Christmas time! We gaze it every Christmas season. The situation is predictable but a young Thora Birch is an qualified asset. The comedy is unique and the belly laughs are numerous. Lauren Bacall gives an sterling performance as Grandma. Children will worship it and adults will devour the humor. It is a novel day Christmas classic.

Wow, I can’t possess no one has written about this movie! Being an 80s child, I loved this movie factual down to the last frame! Ethen Randall (now Ethan Embry) had such incredible talent, and of course a itsy-bitsy crush was there…and he is so distinguished more talented now. But attend to the movie, its a sweet movie about kids trying to support the family together (which is level-headed the case to this day) . Its touching how they included santa in there for a limited more place…it shows you how remarkable this child wants this (she’d extinguish a journey to santa to ask for her parents to reunite – sounds sweet to me!) After watching this film, I fully be pleased the beauty and scope of the River Ganges. This production brings you from the Himalyas to the Bay of Bengal, where the Ganges ends. The photography of animals, birds, fish, and whatever else nature has assign by the Ganges was resplendent. I expected to examine more of the religious side of India, but India is made up of many religions, Hinduism being only one. This DVD is about the Ganges.

So far most people reviewing this film are sparkling remarkable picking out its flaws, which are many indeed, so I won’t bother re-listing them. I will say this though; Bruno Mattei’s blatant and shameless ripping off of Goblin’s Dawn of the Plain and Alien Contamination soundtracks would have certainly made Edward D. Wood Jr. proud. From reading the reviews I was prepared for the worst when I purchased this dvd. I was actually surprised that it was better than most people seem to give it credit for! Certain it has an amazingly inept “Ed Wood-ian” sort of quality… ok yes, it IS in fact a dreadful film, but it does have a lot going for it. #1 – The entertainment value. Like Ed Wood’s “classics” this film remains totally delectable and even has a positive lovable quality despite the fact that it’s such an poor film. It’s lots of fun and there’s never a stupid moment.

#2 – There are some truly effective Zombie sequences. The scenes engaging the zombie priest at the mission, the zombie kid coming to life in his fathers arms, the dreary native coming to life after his “funeral ceremony”. Also the zombie hag with a cat inexplicably ripping out through her stomach made me laugh. It made no sense, but it was calm chilly. #3 – Last but not least, the gore. As the producers said, without blood and entrails, a film like this would be pointless. This film will obtain your stomach turn. It goes far beyond Dawn of the Dreary as far as blood and guts. Even farther than Lucio Fulci’s Zombie. The gore is probably not as disturbing as in Day of the Lifeless because Tom Savini’s fx were unbiased so realistic in that one. However the employ of precise raw meat and pig guts definitely helped “Hell” live up to the splatter genre and then some. The obscene close-ups of maggots crawling through rotting flesh and a native picking them off and eating them were absolutely inferior! Also there are some well done exploding zombie heads. The zombie attack and gut munching scenes are hit or miss. Sometimes they arrive off as startlingly realistic, other times they are obviously counterfeit. But this film doesn’t skimp on the blood and guts. Also towards the extinguish, there’s a facial “violation” scene that rivals Fulci’s “splinter through the examine” sequence.

Overall, if you’re looking for Zombie crème de la crème, stick to Romero and Fulci, but if you’re honest in the mood for something snide and fun, check “Hell” out.

This movie is a classic! Elephantine of wonderfully cheesy diologue, extremely gory special effects, faulty editing, abominable dubbing, and hilarious melodrama, this movie is a high-point in dreadful zombie film history. It’s like “Dawn of the Tiring,” meets “The Gods Must Be Crazy”, complete with out of set stock footage that doesn’t even match the quality of the proper film…you’ve gotta fancy it! The poster art bears a striking resemblance to Fulci’s “Gates of Hell” ( I reflect that might actually be the same zombie) . There are 2 classic vomiting scenes which I laughed so hard at I replayed again for a second laugh. The gore in this movie is so over-the-top and some of it is actually shown in the stock footage. Even the make-up on the living expressionless is inconsistant. The majority of this film takes situation on an island, which adds to the fun. Lots of stock footage of sincere tribes dancing in their native dress (these scenes have been edited into the movie to manufacture you actually gain that the cast is witnessing this) . The two main actors watch so mighty alike that at times it looks as though the same actor is playing 2 parts. Gratuitous nudity is also eager when the female lead sheads her clothing and dons herself with tribal art to fit in with the natives. Unfortunately, she puts it on her face so badly it makes her peer almost dog-like. I’m a ample fan of zombie and cannibal movies and am giving this movie ***** for it’s campy entertainment value, unintentional humor, over-the-top gore sequences, and the fact that there actually ARE zombies in this movie. I watched it alone for the first time to spare myself the embarrassment of having wasted money on such a tiresome film (like I did with the dreadfully monotonous, unfunny and zombieless “Cannibal Apocalypse”), but now I am going to have to fraction this one with friends. Yes, this is a poor film, but there’s never a lifeless moment here.

“Home Alone 2″ has everything the novel did, and some extras. It’s a shrimp bit different, but in a apt design. And to add insult to injury, he had to deal with a couple of bumbling sillies–burglars who wanted to burglarize his house–who went by the name of the “Wet Bandits.” This time around, it’s more of the same, but with a petite difference: this time, he gets on the immoral plane, and is left to his fill devices in the “Gargantuan Apple”–a/k/a Original York City.

The position is delicate similar to the last one in many ways: Kevin gets into inconvenience due to getting into it with his older brother, and is punished. He gets fed up with his family treating him unfairly, and in the midst of his angst, wishes that he could have a vacation on his absorb, without any of his family. The next morning, in a frantic urge, the family rushes to the airport to go to Florida for Christmas vacation. In the airport, Kevin stops to save some batteries into his itsy-bitsy camcorder (which will be largely critical later in the film), and as soon as he lifts his head, his family are long gone. He spots an older guy from the backside who looks like his dad, and therefore gets on the same plane as this gentleman, believing that it really was his dad. Needless to say, he was in for a spacious surprise when the plane landed.

Meanwhile, the “Wet Bandits” (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) sprint from jail, and are in the “Ample Apple” as well. You know what happens: they obnoxious paths, and these two clowns are looking for revenge. The slapstick craziness that was seen in the last film, is taken up an extra notch, and is made gut-bustingly funnier as a result. (And again, unbiased listening to Daniel Stern’s demented operatic-like screeching as he gets his, alone, honest slams the wind straight out of me. It’s too hilarious!)

As for poignant moments, last time around, the “scary” character was an musty man who was rumored to be a murderer. This time, it’s a homeless woman who dwells in Central Park, and her companions are a bunch of pigeons.

My husband loves the appealing finale of “The Three Caballeros” so great he says nothing else here matters, and rates this, ahem, novel Disney collection 5 stars. I, on the other hand, rate it 3. Distinct, the surreal stuff is creative, but the live-action material is so lame! And besides, I want a legend! The 4 stars above are our compromise. (Our teenage daughter, by the scheme, sides more with her father.)

SALUDOS AMIGOS

“Saludos Amigos” is a 42-minute South American travelogue. Produced in 1942 with tiny wartime resources, it uses live-action scenes to link together four cartoons.

The live-action segments point to Walt Disney and a team of Disney artists as they depart to the continent and then bag information and sketch cartoon ideas. Poorly calm, badly weak and politically out of date, the footage has the contemplate of an faded home movie, as well as an obviously overdubbed soundtrack. My husband, however, geezer-in-training that he is, likes these scenes for their historical value, as they are filled with propeller-driven airliners, 1930s automobiles and lots of women in mammoth, flowing dresses.

As for the cartoons, my whole family agrees that they are some of Disney’s best.

(If you capture this DVD, leer for these scene transitions. The lasso segment literally gets pushed off mask by the saddle scene, which itself ends by rolling up like a window shade. When the barbecue segment wipes off at an angle, Goofy nearly falls out of it!)

Finally, considerable like a tropical version of “Fantasia,” the terrific “Aquarela do Brasil” (“Watercolor of Brazil”) starts off as a painting of a vibrant rainforest that comes to life to music, in this case a stout version of the samba standard “Tico Tico No Fubá.” Soon Donald appears, meets Brazilian playboy parrot José Carioca (a Disney version of a Brazilian folk character), and the duo shake their bonbons off into the nightlife of Rio. Worthy of Jose’s dialogue is in Portuguese.

THE THREE CABALLEROS

The most bizarre movie the Walt Disney company has ever produced, 1945’s “The Three Caballeros” is a collection of spirited shorts, all tied together by a bare-bones spot of Donald Duck learning about Latin America. The cartoons progress from typically sweet Disney family fare to a truly psychedelic, adult-oriented swingin’-single travelogue that turns Donald into a libidinous wolf.

It begins as Donald Duck, sitting alone in a room, receives a gigantic box filled with birthday presents “from his friends in Latin America.” First up are a few cartoons about some current animals of South America — “The Icy Blooded Penguin,” “A Visit With More Rare Birds” (rainforest birds) and “The Sage of The Flying Gauchito” (a flying donkey) . These three shorts engage up the first 22 minutes of the film.

Next out of the box are two pop-up books about Brazil and Mexico. Each of these comes to life as its contain peyote-paced spirited featurette.

First, the cigar-chomping José Carioca pops out of the Brazil book and takes Donald on a 19-minute pace to the town of Baia (today’s Salvador) . As a catchy rhythm builds, Carioca creates his beget harmony by dividing into four identical versions of himself, male, then female.

Eventually the birds meet the Cookie Lady (a live-action singer who attracts men with her baked goods) and soon the whole thing turns into what perhaps can best be described as a samba-fueled cookie version of the Marilyn Monroe production number, “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.”

Donald gets jealous and pursues the Cookie Lady through the village — which is, all along, a live-action stage state meant to be a mammoth pop-up-book page. For the finale, the Cookie Lady turns blue, two of her live-action suitors turn into fighting gamecocks and soon everyone and everything — including the buildings, the moon, the waves in the sea — dances into the night.

The book about Mexico brings forth Panchito, a six-gun-shooting cowboy rooster. He tosses sombreros to his unusual feathered friends, proclaims the trio “three blissful caballeros” and takes Donald and José on a 30-minute flying-serape tour of his country.

On Acapulco Beach, Donald goes ga-ga for dozens of live-action bathing beauties (“Near to Papa! Reach here, my exiguous enchilada!”) and keeps losing his swimming suit. At night the duck can’t halt away from the clubs, where he dances with composed more real-life señoritas.

The movie’s bizarre animation includes illogical color changes and an overdose of morphing gags. Donald himself assumes over a hundred shapes and color patterns, and once becomes a woman. Some scenes, however, are shapely Mary Blair gems that would later inspire the films “Cinderella” and “Alice in Wonderland,” as well as the classic Disney attraction It’s a Slight World.

Sound gigantic? My husband clear thinks so, and though I esteem the Mary Blair art, all the surreal animation and dated live-action blending don’t exactly float my boat, and, well, I like my movies with a record! Smooth, some people have always found “The Three Caballeros” irresistibly gripping, and it is certainly a must for any animation fan, as it shows the Disney animation team at its free-for-all zenith.

The two movies were produced as fragment of the U.S. government’s Advantageous Neighbor Policy, an wretchedness to promote pro-American feelings (and combat Nazi sympathies) in Latin America during World War II.

BONUS FEATURES

Extras on the DVD include two valid Donald Duck cartoons. In 1937’s “Don Donald” (also on The Chronological Donald Vol. 1), a flirtatious Daisy Duck (here named “Donna”) gets trapped in the rumble seat of Donald’s car as it bounces through the Mexican desert. In 1944’s “Contrary Condor” (also on The Chronological Donald Vol. 2), Donald finds himself hatching out of a condor egg and dealing with an overprotective mother.

Also included is 1942’s “South Of The Border With Disney,” a 30-minute behind-the-scenes documentary. It shows Disney artists, including Mary Blair, in South America getting inspiration for the attractive sequences in these films. It was also on the year-2000 DVD release of Saludos Amigos.

Overall, my family agrees that there is certainly a lot here for the money, but we’re split on how powerful of it will stand up to expose viewing.

Wow, wow, and triple wow. It is not often that I bag enraged over animation anymore, but these 40+ year ancient films took my breath away. This DVD status contains “Saludos Amigos” (1943) and its follow-up, “The Three Caballeros” (1945) . A team of Disney animators visited Latin America and calm a wealth of film, photos, sketches, paintings, mementoes, and ideas that reflected the culture they soaked up. In “Saludos Amigos,” there is plenty of 16mm footage documenting the trot, interspersed with 4 challenging segments: “Lake Titicaca” starring Donald Duck. “Pedro,” an ADORABLE baby airplane, “El Gaucho Goofy” starring Goofy (and to retort the “burning” inquire, there is no cigarette visible here), and my VERY accepted, “Aquarela do Brasil” (Watercolor of Brazil”) . This finale could easily have been conventional in “Fantasia.” It is a marvel of animation, color, and music. It is absolutely breathtaking. It is curious to notice what this team was able to construct together. Released two years later, “The Three Caballeros” stars Donald Duck, José Carioca (from Brazil), and Panchito Pistoles (from Mexico) . Imagine Walt Disney, Salvador Dali, and Busby Berkeley mixed together, and this film would be the result. The mixing of live-action and animation is pure brilliance. The segment “Las Posadas” is particularly fine, and I would have to guess the visuals owe noteworthy to Mary Blair. The color in both films is aesthetic and lush, looking as if it were honest filmed yesterday. Extras include 2 Donald Duck shorts, “Don Donald” (1937) & “Contrary Condor” (1944) . “Don Donald” shows Donald in his early days, before the styling of Disney animation became objective a tad too slick. Both cartoons are very exquisite. Other extras include a short Walt Disney CBC Interview where Walt discusses the birth of the 2 Latin American films presented here, and “South of the Border,” which includes distinguished of the 16mm film shot by the Disney team while in South America. Although the quality is not as gorgeous as what made its scheme into the feature, it is mild extremely bright to scrutinize. The usual Disney sneak previews can be found on this disc as well.

HIGHLY recommended; lovely animation, and a extraordinary peak into the Latin American culture of the 40’s.

My four year-old loves this well-done inspiring version of Roald Dahl’s BFG book. She enjoys the animation (with a gargantuan, pleasingly spooky beginning, though not too scary) as well as the legend itself.

The Substantial Profitable Giant visits children’s windows each night and sends them good dreams; his other job is to win the dreadful dreams out there and bottle them up so they don’t frighten children, as well as prevent the defective giants from eating children! A lonely girl, Sophie, is one day whisked away from here humdrum orphange by the BFG to succor him with his task. Thereafter the situation thickens and in the destroy the two must enlist the assist of the Queen of England to build all well again.

Made in the UK, the only inequity I can view from the usual Disney fodder is that Colossal Obedient Giant is not nearly as loud, yet it captivated my child throughout, the songs sent her into peals of laughter. I also recommend (based on my child’s response) : William’s Wish Wellingtons, Noddy, Feeble Fill Stories, Rupert and the Runaway Dragon, Postman Pat, Brum and the Baby Carriage, The Secret of Roan Inish, The Borrowers, Thomas the Tank Engine, the Princess and the Goblin.

This is an entertaining version of the children’s epic “The Enormous Edifying Giant” by Roald Dahl. While ostensibly a childrens fable, it contains great that will withhold mothers and fathers watching as well.

As befits a children’s record, the dwelling is simple and speak. A shrimp girl, Sophie, is kidnapped by a valid giant when she catches him at his work delivering dreams. She discovers many things about giants and their world including the fact that there are also some very poor giants who want to eat people.

Eventually, Sophie and the Huge Generous Giant enlist the relieve of the Queen of England and they plot out to obtain the abominable giants.

Children as young as four years outmoded will like this film. They may be puny shocked but it’s not so awful as to give them nightmares. The film will also appeal to older children too as the anecdote, while simple in it’s barest make, contains enough detail and wit to possess interest.

Also, children will catch a lot to talk about in the film and, if parents engage the current new, they have something to read to, or with their child.

I recently saw this film at The Denver Film Festival. It premiered at the Original York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, and has since been nominated for a Spirit Award in the category of Best Foreign Film. Because it was the first French film in 21 years to accept the Palme d’Or at the Festival de Cannes in 2008, I’m predicting it will also be nominated for an Oscar, and it should catch that Oscar. Directed by Laurent Cantet, and based on a semi-autobiographical unique by François Bégaudeau, The Class (Entre les murs, which translates as “Between the Walls”) tells the anecdote of François Martin, a teacher in a rowdy, inner-city middle school in Paris, which represents a microcosm of the conflicting cultures and attitudes in contemporary France. François Bégaudeau stars in the role of the teacher.

Cantet filmed The Class (http://www.sonyclassics.com/theclass/) in a faux documentary style, using multiple improvised shots of proper students and accurate teachers in a multi-ethnic French class in the 20th arrondissment of Paris. Shot almost entirely in a single classroom, noteworthy of the film chronicles François’ verbal confrontations with his French, African, Caribbean, Moroccan, Turkish, and Asian students. While he may not be a perfect teacher, François is highly effective in his pedagogic methods, mighty like Sidney Poitier’s Heed Thackeray character in To Sir, With Treasure. (The films have powerful in well-liked.) In one pivotal scene, he uses the word “pétasse” to record two of his street-savvy female students (which translates as “skank”), which prompts a classmate, Soulaymane (Franck Keita), to defend them at the risk of being expelled and sent encourage to Mali. The first thing director Laurnet Cantet did upright when making “The Class (Entre les Murs) ” was asking the author of the unusual original, François Bégaudeau, to write the film’s screenplay. He then went a step further and cast Bégaudeau as the teacher, M. Marin, which is only fitting since his current is a semi-autobiographical record of his experiences as a literature teacher in a Parisian inner-city middle school. “The Class” is telling a myth, yet it often feels as authentic as a documentary, not unbiased because the actors are incredibly convincing, but also because it has been stripped of broken-down cinematic embellishments. There are no special effects or account for camera tricks. There isn’t even a basic musical regain. I suspect most Western audiences will acknowledge to this movie, despite the fact that it takes station in France. It tackles issues many students and teachers will come by relatable, not the least of which is the sense that bridging the gap between student and teacher is sometimes impossible. Marin starts the semester with the hope that he will connect with his multiracial students, who live in urban areas and advance from lower income families. But as time goes on, he slowly realizes that they don’t want to connect with him. I got the sense that neither side was able to explore the opposing point of view; Marin has a hard time opinion why his students don’t want to learn, whereas the students have a hard time idea why Marin wants them to conform.

Take, for example, the fact that one of Marin’s lessons covers sentence structure, which involves highly confusing terms like “unfavorable predicate,” or something along those lines. The students select none of this in, but when you close and mediate about it, does anyone? In the substantial blueprint of things, diagramming a sentence hardly seems like a valuable skill … unless, of course, you’re planning on becoming a linguistics professor. It’s not that Marin’s students are stupid–they unbiased don’t seek what the point is. Besides, it’s not as if society wants them to be anything more than what they project; it seems that when you’re automatically written off as a unpleasant kid, there’s diminutive point in trying to be something else.

Mind you, none of this is directly stated. This movie is more eager in implications, which is to say that we have no trusty plan why there’s such a disassociation between the students and the faculty. All we know is that it exists, and neither side knows how to form the other understand where they’re coming from. And then there’s the fact that most of the faculty snide disciplinary decisions on statistical facts, and whenever a student faces a behavioral committee, they hear only generic spiels about how he or she isn’t living up to his or her potential. This isn’t quite the design Marin works; he bases disciplinary decisions more on emotion, which ultimately does more to afflict his reputation than improve it.

There’s a enthralling sense of camaraderie amongst the students, as if they all fraction the conception that teachers are the enemy. One of the most troublesome is Souleymane (Franck Kieta), the son of Mali immigrants with a bit of an infuriate management dilemma. There are also Esmeralda (Esmeralda Ouertani), who’s of Middle Eastern descent and never feels valued by Marin, and Khoumba (Rachel Regulier), whose attitude seems to have soured since the last semester; impartial as colorful as they are fretful, both girls seem to know impartial how to consume Marin’s less conservative teaching methods against him. The only distant character is Wei (Wei Huang), the brainy son of Chinese immigrants. We don’t learn grand about him, although we suspect that his scholastic achievements are influenced more by duty than by a need to display himself.

One of the best achievements of “The Class” is making us feel like we know the characters, and this is despite the fact that personal details are mostly kept hidden. We know, for example, that Marin is approachable as a human being, and he gets along fair heavenly with the rest of the faculty, many of who are honest as frustrated by their students as he is. But when it comes to being a mentor, something is seriously lacking; he can “shriek” in the strictest sense of the word, but that doesn’t mean his students are actually learning anything.

An considerable metaphor is introduced towards the slay of the film, but to recount it would do you a gigantic disservice. Let it suffice to say that the final few shots say volumes about the relationship between students and teachers, or lack thereof. It may not be immediately certain, but if you pay terminate attention, I’m obvious you will rob up on it. It’s a refreshing reach to the typical Hollywood version of a school drama, where interested but inexperienced teachers are able to arrive out to their at-risk students and forever change their lives. This isn’t to say that “The Class” is a French version of school drama; it feels so expedient that genre doesn’t even advance into play. This is an absolutely astonishing movie. I have watched it again and again. It seems to be one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, yet it was a very marvelous dilapidated fashioned, innocent, and more professional humor than most other comedies. I mediate it is a work of art and should be added to DVD format. Being that noteworthy of my family is German, Gert Fröbe was my common character. A amusing and warm resemblance of the Prussian gentleman of the time. All the national characters were humorous too. Terry Thomas was astonishing and gave me plenty of laughs. The Frenchmen and the Italian (Emilio) were mountainous too. You will unprejudiced feel naturally happier after you glimpse this movie. Don’t even hesitate to hold it!

Finally! The 20th Century-Fox 1965 roadshow extravaganza comes to DVD. The movie looks salubrious in what must be a transfer from a restored 70mm print. On my 16X9 HDTV in progressive scan the images are quite delicate for a film of this vintage. The Dolby Digital 5.0 remastering of the modern 6-track magnetic soundtrack is also a joy to the ears. This is an musty entertainment for the entire family. Thanks to its presentation on this novel DVD the movie is once again a mammoth experience. The extras are extensive for such a moderately priced DVD too. Director Ken Annakin provides an lively commentary track and appears in a fresh featurette. Somebody at Fox definately loves this movie, one that is a childhood approved of mine. I saw it in its fresh release, and also in a 1969 reissue as section of a double feature with Fox’s “Planet of the Apes.” “The Perfect Mates” the ads said, “Apes and Men.” Studios unbiased don’t don’t do things like that anymore. Anyway, this DVD is a joy!

In her unchanging, always-spring forest lives a unicorn (instruct of Mia Farrow), ageless, wise and innocent, and without regret–unicorns can feel sorrow, but it’s not the same thing. One day, when men arrive into her forest to hunt, she discovers that she is the last of the unicorns. With snatches of relieve and hints from a dizzy butterfly, she sets out to secure the others. On her plot she picks up an incompetent magician named Schmendrick (jabber of Alan Arkin), a withered woman named Molly Grue (express of Tammy Grimes), and eventually finds the kingdom of King Haggard (order of Christopher Lee) and his son Lir (narrate of Jeff Bridges) . But in the changing, aging world of humans, can the unicorn even support track of who she is and how the myth should ruin?

The movie version isn’t perfect. There are some awkward scenes, including a bad duet by Mia Farrow and Jeff Bridges which never should have been included, and some scenes believe material such as aloof profanity, bare breasts and depictions of death which might not be apt for children. But there is an earnestness to this film, a magic in the design ideas are expressed, that’s all too rare in current filmmaking. This quality helps many viewers overlook the film’s flaws.

So if The Last Unicorn is that gracious of a movie, why does it only rate two stars? Because the modern U.S. DVD release is awful. This is a full-frame release, ***not widescreen***. The DVD has bad cloak art and offers zero special features. The trusty transfer is grainy and blurry in spots, with no evidence of any kind of restoration work. The soundtrack has a distinctly tinny quality. In fact, the only reason one would lift this DVD was if one had only a single copy of the film taped off television some 15 years ago and watched over and over until the VHS tape nearly wore out… rather like me, in fact.

Don’t acquire this DVD. I wouldn’t have done so if I had known what I know now. Instead, contact the distributors and ask a fully-restored widescreen release in North America.

Let me commence by saying that The Last Unicorn is my well-liked movie of all time. I have loved it since I was very, very young. However, I truly wish I had never bought this DVD.

First off, the movie is paunchy shroud and not widescreen–this could easily be forgiven if the DVD didn’t have numerous other problems. The record quality is dreadful and looks as though they ripped the movie from the ragged VHS master. There are also some scenes where the inequity seems to be up too high. I know that these are not simply issues with the unique movie because I have the German release and its describe is flawless (not to mention widescreen) and pleasing. This release also has one of the worst menus I have ever seen. The DVD says it has special features, but I can’t pick up them!

If you’re a hardcore Last Unicorn fan, don’t recall this DVD. Your conventional VHS version is unprejudiced as reliable.

The Sea Hawk is, perhaps, my current Errol Flynn film, with it’s rousing sea battles, astonishing swordplay, chaste romance, and political intrigue, as well as a lustrous Korngold gather, and Michael Curtis’ bewitching direction. As a video, it has had almost as circuitous a ride as Captain Thorpe had, returning to England from Panama!

When CBS/Fox first released the film to VHS, in the 80’s, the only existing prints had been edited, both for theatrical rereleases in the leisurely 40s, and for television. This was the ‘accepted’ version of the film, even though it was widely known that The Sea Hawk was several minutes longer relieve in 1940.

Then, a copy of the Recent print was found, in England, and CBS/Fox posthaste repackaged it, and released it as UNCUT. This is the version we spy today, just down to the ‘British Board of Censors’ Approval, at the begin of the film. The best known additions to the film were Queen Elizabeth’s stirring speech (written as a slap at the Nazis) ; a brief, almost leering scene, as Thorpe prepares to have a lovers’ rendevous; and, most importantly, a sepia-tinted version of the Panama scenes, that captures the sweltering heat of the jungle!

The additions develop The Sea Hawk even MORE toothsome for both film buffs and Flynn fans! If you haven’t seen it, yet, you’re in for a treat!

This is the sort of romantic adventure that Hollywood doesn’t form distinguished anymore–the sort of movie that has been superseded, lamentably, by the speical effects-laden action movies of today. “The Sea Hawk” is one of the finest of the genre.

In one of his finest performances, Errol Flynn is Captain Geoffrey Thorpe, an English privateer modeled after Sir Francis Drake. War looms between Elizabethan England and Spain. We meet Captain Thorpe when he captures a Spanish ship carrying the unique Ambassador, Don Alvarez, and his half-English niece, Donna Maria (played by a glowing Brenda Marshall) . As Thorpe conveys the ambassador to England, sparks coast between him and Donna Maria, of the sort that let us know that they’re made for each other.

At Queen Elizabeth’s court, Thorpe’s fellow “sea hawks” press the queen to produce up a quickly, while her counselor Lord Wolfingham opposes them. Thorpe, with the queen’s completely unofficial sanction, plans a blow against the Spanish, while his romance with Maria blossoms. But wait, why is Lord Wolfingham spending all that time with the Spanish Ambassador…

Besides Flynn and Marshall, the film boasts standout performances from Flora Robson as Queen Elizabeth, Claude Rains as Don Alvarez (surprisingly sympathetic towards his niece and her esteem for Thorpe), and Henry Daniell as the nefarious, well-named Wolfingham. Farther down the cast you have solid performances from the likes of Alan Hale, Una O’Connor and Donald Crisp.

The jewel in “The Sea Hawk’s” crown is Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s secure. Korngold was the John Williams of his day, the master of the rich orchestral film win. Why he didn’t earn an Oscar for this, his finest win of all, is one of Hollywood’s many mysteries.

But of course, so is the request of why Hollywood doesn’t invent movies like this anymore.
